The United States of America. How does it contribute to overpopulation you may ask? Well, the United States may have a population of about 320,051,000 people in 2013 estimated by United Nations report "World's Population 2012" (2012) which is less than the population of China and India, the United States still accounts for the third largest population on Earth. With such a lower population compared to China and India makes you think that the United States much use less resources right? That is not the case. According to Scientific America's "Use It and Lose It: The Outsize Effect of U.S. Consumption on the Environment" (2012), "With less than 5 percent of world population, the U.S. uses one-third of the world’s paper, a quarter of the world’s oil, 23 percent of the coal, 27 percent of the aluminum, and 19 percent of the copper". Not only that, but the United States consumes more electricity than other countries. According to Nation Master, in the year 2012, the United States accounted for 17.2% the world’s energy use placing it second next to China who used 20.8% of the worlds’ electricity. The United States is having a major impact on the world due to its reckless consumption of natural resources despite its smaller size to China itself. This indicates that with the third largest population on Earth, the United States still uses more resources than other countries that may contribute to more pollution being released into the environment. According to a report in 2008 by the United States Environmental Protection Agency entitled "Global Greenhouse Gas Emissions Data", China contributed to about 23% of total carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuel combustion and some industrial Processes (millions metric tons of carbon dioxide while the United States ranks third with 19%" (Global Emissions. (2013, September 9). In the United States, the top three most populous cities are the following: New York City, New York; Los Angeles, California; and Chicago, Illinois (The 30 Most Populous Cities. (2013). The United Sates is having a great impact on the planet; therefore, the United Sates must lower its overall population and use of its natural resources.
