Statistical Analyses
Description of Topic
Do personal experiences affect a person's judgement in concluding that the earth is overpopulated? By learning how people respond whether they think that the earth is overpopulated based on their personal experiences will help researchers understand whether people are ignorant to the issue, do not care, or just don't realize overpopulation is an issue.
A two-proportion z test shall be used in the observational study.
My null hypothesis is that there is no difference between the two groups of people who claim that the Earth is overpopulated despite if they have personal experiences or not.
My alternative hypothesis is that there is a difference between the two groups of people who claim that the Earth is overpopulated based on their personal experiences or not.
Description of Statistics
The explanatory variable is that personal experiences were or were not used in the person’s answer which will separate the two groups in “yes they have used personal experiences” or “no they have not used personal experiences”. The response variable will be the number of individuals who have answered that the planet is overpopulated based on their personal experiences or not.
The proportion of people who have used personal experiences or not in concluding that the planet is or not overpopulated shall be used in analyzing whether there is a significance difference between their responses in a two proportion z test. If there is a significant difference between the two groups of people, then we can conclude that personal experiences might or might not affect the person's judgement in concluding that the earth is overpopulated.
Description of Data Collection Process
The type of test that will be used to analyse the research obtain from the surveys will be a 2-proportion z-test. Group 1 will represent the individuals who claimed that the earth is or is not overpopulated based on their personal experiences. Group 2 will represent the individuals who claim that the earth is or is not overpopulated without using their personal experiences. The way how this test will be used is by comparing the proportion of people who answered that the earth is overpopulated based on their experiences or not then they shall be compared to each other to see if their is a significant difference between the groups; however, if there is no difference between the two groups then it is safe to conclude that there is no effect from personal experiences influencing a person's judgement in concluding that the earth is overpopulated.
There will be a sample of 35 students from the total number of 350 students in Social Justice that will be used in the study which they will be selected through the use of a simple random sample where each individual will be given a three number digit from 001-350 and 35 numbers will be chosen randomly through a random number generator.
The conditions of the test are as followed:
State section: Is there a correlation between personal experiences and overpopulation at a significance level of 0.05?
Null hypothesis: There is no difference between the two groups of people who claim that the Earth is or is not overpopulated despite if they have personal experiences or not.
Alternate hypothesis: There is a difference between the two groups of people who claim that the Earth is or is not overpopulated based on their personal experiences or not.
Plan section: Check conditions for a 2-proportion z-test
Independent: 35 individuals out of 350 make up ten percent of the population; therefore, the 10% condition is met.
Random: A simple random sample is being used to choose the individuals.
Normal:
n1*p1 is greater than or equal to 10 and n1*(1-p1) is greater than or equal to 10
n2*p2 is greater than or equal to 10 and n2*(1-p2) is greater than or equal to 10
Both the number of successes and failures must be greater than or equal to 10 in order to meet the normal condition.
Group 1 will represent the individuals who claimed that the earth is or is not overpopulated based on their personal experiences.
Group 2 will represent the individuals who claim that the earth is or is not overpopulated without using their personal experiences.
Do section: Conduct a 2-proportion z-test and the P-value will be compared to the significance level of 0.05.
Conclude: Conclusion will be based on the results gained from the observational study in order to determine whether personal experiences might or might not affect a person’s judgment in concluding that the earth is overpopulated.
