In order to lower the excess growth of human life on earth, there needs to be more accessible family planning options for people globally especially in "third world" countries. What I mean by that is that according to the United Nations report, “2013 Update for the MDG Database: Unmet Need for Family Planning,” there were about 117 countries that have unmet needs for family planning from the period of 1990-2012 for women aged 15 to 49. Not only that, but the countries that have 20% or more unmet need for family planning are in the sub-Saharan Africa, four countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, eight countries in Asia and four countries in Oceania according to Figure 1 of the United Nations report, “Population Facts (2013)” This means that if these countries could have access to family planning, then there wouldn't be about 200 million women using unsafe methods of birth control that lead to an estimated 74,000 deaths from unsafe abortions according to the United Nations Population Fund report, “Reproductive Health Ensuring that Every Pregnancy is Wanted” (Key Publications).
The challenge that many “third world countries” have in common due to inaccessibility to birth control is the costs. According to the “New study finds little progress in meeting demand for contraception in the poorest countries” by Gustavo Suárez (2013),
The challenge that many “third world countries” have in common due to inaccessibility to birth control is the costs. According to the “New study finds little progress in meeting demand for contraception in the poorest countries” by Gustavo Suárez (2013),
“ …researchers found that between 2003 and 2012 in the developing world, overall modern contraceptive use increased from 71% to 74% among women wanting to avoid pregnancy, though rates varied greatly among subregions. Notable progress was made in Eastern Africa (31% to 46%), Southern Africa (75% to 83%), Southeast Asia (64% to 72%), Central America (71% to 77%) and South America (73% to 79%). In contrast, virtually no progress was made in the subregions with the lowest rates of use: in Middle Africa, contraceptive use increased only from 17% to 19% and in Western Africa, from 22% to 26%. Overall, in most subregions, modern contraceptive use grew more slowly between 2008 and 2012 than between 2003 and 2008” (Suarez, 2013).
This means that third world countries in Africa are still in need of access to more family planning options to help them lower their population than compared to developing countries that have more access to birth control than other places.
What we can do to help solve this problem is by making charitable donations to the United Nations Population Fund at their website entitled “http://www.unfpa.org/public/home/donate”. What UNPF does is the following: provide training to midwives and health workers, supplying contraceptives in emergency situations, ensuring youth-friendly reproductive health care, providing counseling and choices to women who want to avoid or delay pregnancy, and educating men on the benefits of birth spacing (About UNFPA). With their help, we will be able to control the population from going over the carrying capacity of the earth so future generations can benefit from this planet like their predecessors.
On my website I will have a link for those interested in this topic to donate funds to help start these much needed programs which is “http://www.unfpa.org/public/home/donate”. My goal is to raise at least $100 dollars from donations each year from my site to help UNPF efforts in providing family planning for those less fortunate.
